BIGBANK Gold League

The Bigbank Gold League – the biggest and most prestigious series of athletics competitions in the Baltic States – came into being on the 9th of January 2006 when Bigbank and the non-profit organisation Spordiürituste Korraldamise Klubi /Sporting Events Organisation Club/ entered into a cooperation and sponsorship agreement. Three years later, on the 15th of January 2009, a follow-up agreement was signed which is seeing the bank providing a total of three million kroons in support of the Gold League over four years (until 2012). Previously going under the name of the ‘BIG Gold League’, the successful series of competitions was rechristened the ‘BIGBANK Gold League’ in 2009 in line with the change in the business name of the company.

The BIG Gold League comprises three stages in winter and five in summer. The summer series of competitions sees athletes competing for a jackpot. This amount, which has increased over the years and made the transition from Estonian kroons to the euro, is divided up between those athletes who win all of the stages in their ‘gold’ event during the summer. The winners of each stage also receive cash prizes.

Holding different stages of the Gold League at stadiums all over Estonia, Bigbank has brought the excitement and spirit of sporting competition to people throughout the country – not just in Tallinn. This has seen a number of very well-known international athletes competing in such places as Kohila, Jõgeva, Rakvere and Viljandi. Almost 50 different countries have been represented in competition in the history of the Gold League, with athletes from Estonia and abroad posting many personal, local and national records, season bests and other world-class results.
